This information will be used to help us create a program to match your bowling style. You cannot outrun a poor technique. Ultimately fast bowling is about coordination and sequencing. Each part of the bowling action or ‘node’ as I term it having a direct or indirect impact on another. The first node that I analyse is the position of the back foot on contact [BFC]. This ultimately is an ingrained myelinated pattern. When you delivered your first ball your foot landed where it was most efficient and where the body felt safest. The body is a protective organism and searches safety, efficiency over performance. This is why your technique needs to utilise the natural movement and rotational forces that occur in the body naturally through the fascial system. Back foot 1What direction does your back-foot point when it lands?* Straight (0 degrees) Midway (45 degrees) Sideways (90 degrees) 2aBackFoot1StraightMidwaySidewaysWhat is the angle of your knee before your backfoot hits the ground?* Large Angle Small Angle – 2aBackFoot2Large AngleSmall AngleWhat is the angle of your knee on impact when your backfoot hits the ground?* It bends more It stays the same – 2aBackFoot3Bends More Stays the Same After identifying what angle the foot lands, we then need to assess whether this node aids performance and transfer of momentum through into front foot contact [FFC] or if it hinders performance and causes deceleration on ground contact. One of the main specific critical indicators is the ability to maintain the height and velocity of the centre of mass [COM] into FFC. This is a key determinant of ball velocity. If the heel of the back-foot touches on contact and too much time spent on the ankle rocker then deceleration occurs, and momentum is decreased. This has huge implication further on during the kino-sequence. Back foot 2Does your heel touch the ground on back foot contact? (BFC)* Yes it touches the ground No it does not touch the ground – 2aBackFoot4Touches the groundDoes not touch the groundThe next question is what separates the ‘Pacelab training system’ from all others is the ‘classification system’. Are you hip or knee dominant? The angle of the back-knee pre-contact is what determines this dominance. Do you flex or are you straight pre ground contact? Once again this is a habit born out of environmental, organismic and task constraints during maturation. The consequence of the collision and the ability of the body to control impact is then what highlights the limiting factors. Are you deficient in the eccentric shock absorbing phase, spend too long on the ground which highlights a lack of isometric strength or do you lack propulsive force and lack reactivity and tendon stiffness? One of the main consequences and parasitic implications is the inability to fully extend the front leg out into swing leg retraction as the body will protect itself by ‘stumbling’ forward- ‘stumble reflex’. So, the final profiling question is whether your front leg is braced, or does it collapse on collision with the ground? And after contact does it brace, or does it sink further?Front footBefore impact is your front foot straight or is it flexed at the knee?* Straight Flexed at the knee – 2aFrontFoot1StraightFlexed at the kneeOn impact with the ground does your knee remain braced or does it collapse?* Braced Collapse – 2aFrontFoot2BracedCollapsed In this section we are going to measure your physical attributes to understand whether you are a Muscle driven (Strength, static) or Tendon Driven (Speed, Spring). This will be paired with your technical capacity to build the correct programme for you. Following the technical questions, the process then moves onto identifying the physical strength or limitations of the athlete. Does their anthropometry match their biomechanics? The purpose of this section is to ultimately identify whether a fast bowler is muscle, contractile and strength dominant or tendon, connective, fascia driven speed athlete. The discrepancies between the exercises in the test will guide the programme design towards training their limiting factors whilst respecting their strength. The ideal place to be is in the middle of the strength [static] and speed [spring] continuum. Training is aimed at shifting this needle towards a profile that supports the biomechanical needs of each individual. Task 1Task 1: Depth Jump*Please enter a number from 0 to 400.For this task you will need to set up a platform of around 30cm high. From this platform you will drop off of it and then jump as far as you can and record the distance travelled.Task 1: Long Jump*Please enter a number from 0 to 400.From the same point where you drop off of the platform, would you please do a stationary long jump and record the distance travelled.Task 2Task 2: Depth Jump*Please enter a number from 0 to 400.For this task you will need to set up a platform of around 30cm high facing a wall and a tape measure to record your jump height. From this platform you will drop off of it and then jump as high as you can and record the maximum height reached. Task 2: Vertical Jump*Please enter a number from 0 to 400.Remove the platform from the jumping area. From the same point where you dropped off the platform do a stationary vertical jump and record the height reached.Task 3For this task you will require a medicine ball of around 4kgs. If you have no medicine ball please use something around that weight.Task 3: Medicine Ball Pass*Please enter a number from 0 to 10.From a standing position with the medicine ball against your chest throw the ball as far as you can. Measure where the ball lands and not where it rolls and record the length reached. Task 3: Medicine Ball Pass*Please enter a number from 0 to 10.From a standing position with the medicine ball outstretched in front of you, rebound the medicine ball against your chest and then push as far as you can. Measure where the ball lands and not where it rolls and record the length reached.Task 4Task 4: Weighted ball long toss*Please enter a number from 0 to 50.For this task the ball must weigh approximately 300g. This is heavier than a cricket ball. From a static back foot contact position, enter the delivery stride and bowl the ball with an upward projection as far as you can. Then record the distance reached by this ball where it landed and not where it rolled to.Task 4: Weighted ball long toss*Please enter a number from 0 to 50.Now use a tennis ball and repeat the process. From a static back foot contact position, enter the delivery stride and bowl the ball with an upward projection as far as you can. Then record the distance reached by the ball where it landed and not where it rolled to.Task 5Task 5: Squat Jump*Please enter a number from 0 to 400.Compare squat jump and counter movement jump. Stand in the squat position close to a wall. Go down to the bottom of the squat position and hold it for 2 seconds and then jump as high as you can and measure the height against the wall. Take your best score from three attempts.Task 5: Counter movement jump*Please enter a number from 0 to 400.For the counter movement jump, stand in an upright position, squat down as quick as possible and then rebound up quickly and jump as high as possible. Take your best score from three attempts Below are series of statements with a range of possible answers. Please answer each instinctively, there is no right or wrong answers. The answers to these questions will help us to determine your Neurotype. Your Neurotype will be used to determine your learning style which in turn will help us to provide a program which suits you best. THERE ARE THREE MAIN BASIC PROFILE TYPES IN NEUROTYPING: Neurotype 1: This type has low dopamine levels, so he or she seeks out novelty or new things to stimulate their naturally low dopamine. In psychobiology, they call this the novelty-seeking type. Neurotype 2: These types have low norepinephrine levels. Since norepinephrine is associated with confidence and a sense of well-being, these people seek out rewards to boost their norepinephrine levels. It’s referred to as the reward dependent type in science. Neurotype 3: This type is associated with low serotonin. They don’t like change; they like to master a repetitive activity. “Technique geeks” fit this profile. In psychobiology, they call this the harm avoider type you can read more if you want a more detailed explanation on the Neurotyping tests we perform.I am extremely competitive; I need to win or be the best at everything I do.* Doesn’t describe me at all Is not really representative of myself, applies less than half the time Somewhat representative of myself, true a bit more than half the time Describes me well, true most of the time Describes me really well, true pretty much all the time 4Neuro1 1A - When I’m in a group I automatically want to take control.* Doesn’t describe me at all Is not really representative of myself, applies less than half the time Somewhat representative of myself, true a bit more than half the time Describes me well, true most of the time Describes me really well, true pretty much all the time 4Neuro2 1A-When I get angry or mad about something/someone I stay this way for a long time.* Doesn’t describe me at all Is not really representative of myself, applies less than half the time Somewhat representative of myself, true a bit more than half the time Describes me well, true most of the time Describes me really well, true pretty much all the time 4Neuro3 1A- I like conflicts. Each system has its own distinct principle that allows flexibility in the training programme, whether that be around work commitments, family life, additional team training, physical capacity, recovery and Neurotyping. Due to your previous answers only a certain number of systems are available to you. Omni Contractions What is it? Omni contraction is where there is a daily focus for each contraction. Eccentric day, isometric day, and a concentric day. The programme is periodised accordingly, with an accumulation phase, intensification phase and explosion phase. This system is high frequency and training session are every day. Programme includes general strength, specific strength and skill stability exercises. Triphasic Training What is it? Triphasic training is very similar to Omni contraction but now each contraction has a block of training. Each block will last four weeks with a focus on either Eccentric, isometric or concentric contraction. This is a high frequency programme and training sessions are everyday. Bondarchuck Classification What is it? Bondarchuck classification is ideal for those fast bowlers or athletes who like to keep it simple. There is a focus on high frequency and limited variation. The main focus of bondarchuck is improving the key transferable lifts and specific exercises that will allow a more stable technique. What is it? Bondarchuck system is ideal for type 1A fast bowlers who thrive on intensity. Isometric training with low volume, low variation, and high frequency. This will help PaceLab guide you towards the correct training system. The final question in the profiling process is to identify the training age of each fast bowler. The process of intervention is guided by how many years and the quality of the training performed. Chronological age is only a small part of the picture. To access the benefits of the skill-stability and the other specific strength training methods in the Pacelab Training System it is essential that each individual has a foundational base of strength. This will enhance the quality of the programme and increase the chances of an increase in ball velocity.
